Michelle Williams in "Marilyn" film gets NY debut (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – "My Week with Marilyn," starring Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams as 1950s sex symbol Marilyn Monroe, will see its world premiere at the New York Film Festival in October, organizers said on Thursday.

Directed by Simon Curtis, the film is based on a week that British writer Colin Clark worked as an assistant with Monroe while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" in the United Kingdom in the early summer of 1956.

That film featured Monroe working opposite Sir Laurence Oliver and was shot when Monroe was on a honeymoon with her husband, playwright Arthur Miller. When he left England, Clark was assigned to introduce Monroe to British life.

"My Week with Marilyn" is based on a diary Clark kept, excerpts of which were published in two books in 1995 and 2000. Along with Williams, the movie also stars Kenneth Branagh as Olivier, Dougray Scott as Miller and Dame Judi Dench.

"After seeing Marilyn Monroe so often portrayed in films as a caricature, it is a pleasure to see this complex personality and unique on-screen presence portrayed so well by such a talented actress as Michelle Williams," said Richard Pena, program director for The Film Society of Lincoln Center, which backs the festival.

The film, which will look to compete in Hollywood's Oscar race this upcoming season, will get its New York Film Festival premiere on October 9 and be released in theaters on November 4.

Williams has been nominated twice for Oscars for her work in "Brokeback Mountain" and "Blue Valentine," but she has never won the world's top film honor.

The New York Film Festival, which takes place September30 through October 16, will also feature a special screening of the digitally-restored version of William Wyler's "Ben-Hur." It also will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Japan's Nikkatsu Films with screenings of many of that studios films, including Kon Ickhkawaa's "The Burmese Harp" and Masahiro Makinoa's "Singing Love Birds."

Sarah Michelle Gellar doubles up at Comic-Con (AP)

By DERRIK J. LANG, AP Entertainment Writer Derrik J. Lang, Ap Entertainment Writer – Thu Jul 21, 11:15 pm ET

SAN DIEGO – Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't trying to duplicate "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" with "Ringer."

Gellar said during a panel Thursday at Comic-Con that she was drawn to the new serialized CW thriller because it wasn't like the supernatural series that she starred in for seven seasons. In "Ringer," which debuts Sept. 13, Gellar plays mysterious estranged twins Bridget and Siobahn.

"I knew I wanted to come back to television," said Gellar.

The 34-year-old actress said she feels like she's actually playing five characters in "Ringer": Bridget and Siobhan in the present, in the past and Bridget pretending to be Siobhan, which she dubbed "Siovette." Fans shouldn't expect any "Buffy"-style antics though.

"There will be no demons, no vampires and nothing supernatural," executive producer Nicole Snyder informed fans. "Sorry, guys."

It's not the first time Gellar has played opposite herself. She appeared as a robot Buffy in the fifth season. Gellar said "Ringer" scenes featuring both twins will be filmed using techniques like a body double and computer-generated effects.

"I think by season three, they'll clone me," joked Gellar.

Michelle Obama to appear on TV's "Extreme Makeover" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – First lady Michelle Obama will appear on ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" as part of her initiative to support military families, the network said on Tuesday.

Michelle Obama's appearance on the show will be shot on Thursday in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and the episode will air in October, said Patrick Preblick, a spokesman for ABC.

The first lady is making the appearance as part of her Joining Forces initiative for military families.

The episode will focus on 15-year U.S. Navy veteran Barbara Marshall and her family. Michelle Obama and the "Extreme Makeover" team will help Marshall's mission of assisting homeless veterans by building a new house that will house several families, ABC said in a statement.

Michelle Obama last month filmed an appearance on the children's TV show "iCarly" which was also tied to her Joining Forces initiative. In 2009, she was seen in an episode of "Sesame Street" to promote healthy eating.

The reality TV series "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" performs speedy and drastic home renovations for families that have suffered misfortune.
