Review: Joss Stone's latest needs some fire (AP)

"Mmm-mmms" can carry a song but so far. Besides, that particular vocal trick only works on R&B tracks if you pour a lot of soul into those throaty stylings. Otherwise, you end up with the sometimes soulless offerings of Joss Stone's fifth CD, "LP1."

Ever since her debut album, "The Soul Sessions," came out in 2003 expectations have been high for Stone, partly because she landed with a winner — even though it was a CD of R&B covers — but mostly because she showed an enormous talent that teased of great vocal outings to come.

Her talent is still huge and her voice still big, rich, raspy and emotional. So what went wrong on "LP1"?

Maybe it's the curse of the title: Obviously, it's not her first album, so if she's telling us this is a do-over (and she does have a new label and new producer, former Eurythmics Dave Stewart) then she'd better deliver large.

Stone does deliver on the lyrics, which are considerably edgy and mature, and centered on renewal and freedom. It's the music, though, that needs some juice. There is no fire, no emotional core to pump the blood and rock us out. She needs rounder, more textured sounds to illumine a voice that reaches from a gospel growl to a plaintive sweetness.

She opens with "Newborn," a guitar-infused edgy tale that sets the tone, pleading to treat the day "like a newborn baby" who needs to be cared for: "What happened to this morning when I woke up hung over? ... Everybody's taking care of themselves/But not no one else. ... We're stiffening our love."

Later, she tries to tear it up with "Don't Start Lying to Me Now" and the anthem-like "Boatyard." But Chad Cromwell's rhythms intrude with an almost drum-kit quality.

Still, "LP1" is worth a listen just to hear Stone's remarkable voice. But it will leave you wanting much more — just not from "LP1."

Judge: Lohan needs to speed up community service (AP)

LOS ANGELES – A judge warned Lindsay Lohan Thursday that she must spend more time doing community service and enroll in psychological counseling or risk running into problems with her probation.

In a separate development, Lohan was sued for assault and battery in Riverside County by a former worker at the Betty Ford Center who had a dispute with the actress in December.

In Los Angeles, Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner reminded the actress during a status hearing in her criminal cases that she had to complete 480 hours of community service by next April, and that she would not grant any extensions, even if Lohan is working on a film.

"She's not going to get five minutes more than one year" to complete the service at a shelter for women and the county morgue, Sautner said.

The judge opened the hearing by telling Lohan that probation officials had submitted a report stating she had violated the terms of her release.

"Don't look shocked Ms. Lohan because it isn't true," Sautner said, explaining the probation officer was relying on incorrect information.

The judge did chide the actress for not providing officials with a phone number where she could be reached for monitoring.

It was Lohan's first appearance in court since completing 35 days of house arrest. Her attorney, Shawn Holley, noted the actress was prohibited from doing community service during that time.

Lohan, 25, has completed one of four anti-shoplifting classes. Sautner said she must complete the rest before returning to court on Oct. 19.

Holley said her client is having trouble enrolling in court-ordered psychological counseling. Sautner agreed that the actress should not have to enroll in group treatment, but said Lohan must find someone to counsel her within three weeks.

Lohan cannot afford to pay a psychiatrist who was previously treating her but would find a new program shortly, Holley said.

The actress remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case and a misdemeanor grand theft case in which she pleaded no contest in May to taking a $2,500 necklace without permission.

In the newly filed lawsuit, court records show Dawn Holland, who is now using her maiden name Bradley, sued Lohan claiming assault and battery. A full copy of the suit was not immediately available.

Bradley's attorney, Owen McIntosh, said his client requires surgery on her wrist for an injury sustained in the incident.

"This is a very real injury," he told The Associated Press.

Steve Honig, a spokesman for Lohan, declined comment on the case.

Police did not charge Lohan in the incident, and Bradley was fired from Betty Ford Center for discussing it on camera with celebrity website TMZ.

Bradley had been attempting to administer a breathalyzer test on the actress, who had missed curfew and was with two other girls who admitted drinking that night, according to a probation report.

Daniel Baldwin says wife needs treatment (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. – Actor Daniel Baldwin said Friday that his decision to file for divorce says nothing about how he feels about his wife, but it's an attempt to encourage her to get treatment for alcoholism.

Baldwin told Portland television station KOIN that his 41-year-old wife, Joanne, "ripped the house to shreds" Sunday morning as the children screamed and cried. He filed for divorce and was granted a restraining order this week.

The couple have lived in the affluent Portland suburb of Lake Oswego since last year.

Baldwin — brother of actors William, Stephen and Alec Baldwin — said he was torn about how to handle his wife's behavior, but it has to be her own decision to get sober. He said he's focused on keeping their children safe.

"I want nothing more than for her to get help, and I want nothing more than to go into those family programs and hold her hand during it, should she decide to do that," Baldwin said.

Joanne Baldwin is on probation for a drunken driving conviction and prohibited from drinking alcohol, her husband said. She has been accused of violating the terms of her probation and is jailed in Lake Oswego. A hearing is scheduled next week.

The Lake Oswego Municipal Court says she has no attorney listed.

Baldwin said he's open to dropping his divorce filing if his wife shows improvement.

"I wanted her to know how serious it was, and along with the order of protection I filed for divorce," Baldwin told the television station. "That can be changed, but it would require an immediate about-face and a plan of action."

Baldwin discussed his own struggles with addiction and said it's dangerous for him to be around his wife's alcohol abuse while he tries to maintain his own sobriety.

Baldwin acted in television series in the 1990s, including a leading role on the NBC series "Homicide: Life on the Street" and the movie "Car 54, Where Are You?"
