Kiss dropped from Michael Jackson tribute show (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The rock band Kiss was removed from the line-up for a Michael Jackson tribute concert in Britain, after it was revealed frontman Gene Simmons has called Jackson a child molester, organizers said on Tuesday.

The decision to scratch Kiss from the line-up came after Jackson's fans this week expressed anger at Simmons' comments.

"We have listened to Michael's fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons," Chris Hunt, the chief executive of organizer Global Live Events, said in a statement.

"Under the circumstances, we fully agree that even though Kiss is a band Michael admired, we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert," Hunt said.

Kiss, a rock band famous for such songs as "Rock and Roll All Nite" and "Detroit Rock City," was a recent addition to the line-up for the tribute concert.

The "Michael Forever" show is planned for October 8 in Cardiff, Wales, and so far the scheduled performers include Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Smokey Robinson, organizers said.

The concert has the backing of Jackson's mother, Katherine, and his siblings LaToya, Tito, Jackie and Marlon.

The 61 year-old Simmons, who is known for being outspoken, had in the past criticized Jackson over old accusations that the singer abused children. Jackson was acquitted at a trial in 2005 of charges that he molested a boy at his Neverland Ranch.

"The only sexual references ever made about Michael Jackson that were made by anyone, anywhere around the world, have always been made by kids, and specifically males usually 10 to 14 years of age; never females that age or older, and never grown men," Simmons told Classic Rock magazine in 2010.

Howard Weitzman, an attorney for the executors of Jackson's estate lawyer John Branca and music executive John McClain, said on Monday in a letter to the tribute concert organizers they were "disappointed" at the decision to include Kiss.

The letter from Weitzman also raised questions about the October 8 show, including whether all the artists booked to appear will indeed perform that day.

And Weitzman noted that Michael Jackson's brothers, Jermaine and Randy, have publicly said they cannot offer their support for the show.

Jermaine and Randy have said the show is ill-timed because the upcoming involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, who was Jackson's personal physician when the singer died in 2009, is expected to be ongoing when the show is held.

"In light of the questions raised...and the confusion surrounding this 'event,' we are extremely concerned about Michael's legacy, his fans and the public-at-large," Weitzman wrote in the letter.

A spokeswoman for the concert organizers declined to comment on the letter.

Aguilera to perform at Jackson tribute concert (AP)

LOS ANGELES – Christina Aguilera is lending her voice to a Michael Jackson tribute concert planned for October in Wales.

Organizers of "Michael Forever — The Tribute Concert" announced Thursday that Aguilera would be joined by members of the Jackson family, Cee Lo Green, Leona Lewis and the band Alien Ant Farm, which is known for its cover of Jackson's song "Smooth Criminal."

The announcement came after more than two weeks of silence about performers for the Oct. 8 show at Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

While the event is endorsed by the singer's mother and some of his siblings, brothers Randy and Jermaine Jackson have protested its timing. The concert is scheduled during the trial of a doctor charged in Jackson's death.

The singer's estate is also not affiliated with the concert.

Aguilera, Cee Lo to sing at Jackson tribute concert (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Motown veteran Smokey Robinson will perform at a Michael Jackson tribute concert in Britain in October, organizers announced on Thursday.

Several of the brothers of the late King of Pop also will take the stage, as well as British acts Leona Lewis, Craig David and pop band JLS.

Promoters of the Michael Forever concert said other big names would be announced later for the October 8 event at a stadium in Cardiff, Wales.

"We're delighted that such exciting and globally recognized acts have joined the line-up to pay tribute to a music legend...We'll be adding more amazing headliners in the days to come," Chris Hunt, president of concert promoter Global Live Events, said in a statement.

The concert, which has the backing of Jackson's mother Katherine and the singer's siblings LaToya, Tito, Jackie and Marlon, will be broadcast around the world in both 2D and 3D on pay television and into movie theaters. Proceeds will go to AIDS and other charities.

Fans are asked to register in advance for tickets, starting on Thursday, and to pledge a donation to charity.

The tribute concert in October follows a failed attempt by Jermaine Jackson to organize a similar event in Vienna in 2009 shortly after Michael Jackson's death in Los Angeles on June 25 from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol.

The "Thriller" singer's personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, doctor is due to go on trial in Los Angeles in September for involuntary manslaughter.

Beatles barber turns shop into tribute to Fab Four (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Beatles fan Gerardo Weiss ran a typical Buenos Aires barber shop until he had a dream that the Fab Four dropped in for a haircut.

Seven years later, Weiss has made Beatles-inspired cuts his specialty.

"The dream got etched on my memory," he said at the modest salon, the walls plastered with photos of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

"I decided to get rid of the pictures these places usually have and just put up photos of The Beatles ... so people could see them and ask for their haircuts," he said.

One picture shows Lennon cutting someone's hair, another is of Harrison with curly locks down to his shoulders. It is the stuff of inspiration for Weiss.

"My favorite Beatles' haircut is the one Paul McCartney had in '74, when he was doing the Band on the Run tour ... it was short on the sides and longer at the back," said Weiss, whose eight-year-old son is called Lennon.

"When my wife got pregnant I prayed to God for a son, so I could pay homage to John," he said as "Hey Jude," with Lennon strumming on a guitar, played in the background.

It was 40 years ago that the hairdresser first heard a Beatles record, a moment he recalls with almost religious fervor. It was "Love Me Do," the Beatles' first single, that started his life-long love affair with the British band.

At first, the salon's Beatles-inspired makeover was a little too radical for many locals in the working-class city neighborhood of Flores.

Weiss said it was a struggle to convince customers a Beatles' haircut is as cool today as it was when the band from Liverpool revolutionized popular music in the 1960s.

But word spread and people from outside Buenos Aires and even abroad began trickling, joining more adventurous locals.

"I've told some of my friends, the ones who are Beatles fans, to come and they liked the results," Mario Genua, a 22-year-old petrol station attendant, said as Weiss styled his hair into a "John 1964" -- fluffy on top and at the sides.

"They were very different (and) they're still fashionable," he said.

Weiss has no plans to move his business to bigger premises in a trendy neighborhood or to tap into the city's booming tourist trade.

His dream is to keep Beatles' cuts in style.

"I'll carry The Beatles in my soul, my spirit, my blood for the rest of my life," he said. "They left a mark on me and I'm really happy to be able to do what I do. I even get paid for it."

Michael Jackson family members plan tribute concert (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Several members of Michael Jackson's family unveiled plans on Monday for a tribute concert to the late King of Pop, but performers were unnamed leading to a less-than-thrilling announcement for the "Thriller" singer.

The tribute show, supported by Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson, will be held on October 8 in Cardiff, Wales at the Millennium Stadium, which holds about 75,000 people. It will be broadcast live via satellite on pay-per-view television and into movie theaters around the world, some of which will screen it in 3D, said promoter Global Live Events.

Katherine Jackson told reporters at the unveiling in Los Angeles that she is proud of the event and the caliber of singers performing. No names were announced on Monday.

"If my son was here today, he would feel the same way, and so I'd like to say thank you very much for helping to keep my son's legacy alive," she said.

Michael Jackson, who rose to fame in his family of singers then embarked on a solo career that included smash hits such as "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," died in June 2009, of an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol he used as a sleep aid.

His physician at the time, Dr. Conrad Murray, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in Jackson's death. He has pleaded not guilty and a trial will start in September.

Jackson's brother, Jermaine Jackson, tried in vain to mount a tribute concert in Vienna in 2009, but plans were scrapped after he struggled to get big-name acts and the event's organizer went out of business.

Jermaine, and Michael Jackson's father Joe, were not on hand at Monday's announcement. Instead, Katherine was joined by family members, Tito, Jackie, Marlon and La Toya.

"I know that this tribute will be something spectacular," LaToya told reporters.

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports Springsteen kicked things off with "Action in the Streets."

The set ended with a long version of "634-5789."
