‘Palestine 194’ Welcomes Ban’s Support for Palestinian State

RAMALLAH, September 10, 2011 (WAFA) - The national campaign supporting Palestine’s United Nations recognition bid, Palestine State 194, Saturday welcomed UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s support for Palestinian statehood, according to a press release.

In response to a letter addressed to Ban the national campaign handed on Thursday to UN officials in Ramallah, the UN secretary general expressed support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state, stressing that Palestinian statehood was long overdue.

“These comments warmed our hearts,” said the Palestine State 194 statement. “As the National Campaign, we see this position as a reflection of the universal values of human rights, dignity, and peace that the United Nations Charter embodies.”

The release added that the national campaign understands that recognition of Palestine is the sovereign choice of member states at the United Nations. However, it added, “it still believes that the secretary general has a vital role to play in advancing Palestinians’ just demands for Palestine’s overdue recognition and UN membership.”

It said, “As the person chosen to represent the family of nations, Ban Ki-moon can urge for Palestine’s recognition. Also, as the UN’s representative in the international Quartet, we call on the Secretary General to represent the will of the majority in the world and speak for Palestine.”

“Today, 5.2 billion people in 126 member states recognize Palestine. We call on Mr. Ban to ensure that their voice is heard when member states adjourn to discuss Palestine’s recognition and UN membership.”

The national campaign press release affirmed that a free, sovereign, contiguous Palestine in the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital is the key to peace and stability in the region.

It said, “This is what the world agrees to be the peace formula and what international law outlines as the lawful solution, Supporting Palestine is supporting peace and the principles of the United Nations.”
